Members of the far right ‘Azov’ battalion of Ukraine’s National …
DW News on Instagram: “Members of the far right ‘Azov’ battalion of Ukraine’s National Guard held a basic combat training for residents of the Eastern Ukrainian city Mariupol, AP news agency reported. The civilians were taught to assemble and dissemble a gun, to load ammunition and aim at targets as Russia amassed over 100,000 troops at the border with Ukraine.’Azov’ is an all-voluntary military unit that was incorporated into Ukraine’s National Guard in 2015. The battalion has been described as having connections to neo-Nazism. It is just one of more than 80 volunteer battalions that sprung up and battled Russian-backed separatists in the Donbas region in 2014. Some groups had formal ties to the government, others with a far-right ethos were hardly tolerated in Kyiv. Many of these battalions were absorbed by the Ukrainian army. Now, in 2022, the Ukrainian government is again counting on volunteers to bolster their outgunned armed forces. Kyiv aims to recruit up to 130,000 civilians to stiffen its defence, according to a new law that came into effect in January. While better prepared than in 2014, Ukraine’s army would still be sorely outnumbered by Russian forces in the event of an invasion. Military experts say Moscow would face stronger resistance this time. But they emphasize that Ukraine would be well short of what it needs to counter Russia’s overwhelming land, sea and air superiority.Click on the link in bio to see a DW report on Ukrainian civilians that train to defend their country.”

RFE/RL on Instagram: “Azov Regiment soldier Dmytro Kozatskiy (@kztsky) took photos during the last days of the resistance in the Azovstal steel works, showing the conditions the several thousand soldiers and civilians lived in for over two months. His photos are now on exhibition in Kyiv. @currenttime.tv spoke to his mother, who said she had told him that he hasn’t been forgotten. Kozatsikiy’s fate is currently unclear, as he was held prisoner in Olenivka, where dozens of Ukrainian POWs were killed. The Azov Regiment is a far-right volunteer group that has been part of Ukraine’s National Guard since 2014. Formerly a paramilitary militia known as the Azov Battalion, it espouses an ultranationalist ideology that U.S. authorities have linked with neo-Nazi extremism. But supporters see it as a patriotic and effective part of the country’s defense forces.#ukraine #azovstal #russia #russiaukrainewar”

Martyn Aim on Instagram: “The Azov Battalion and their supporters protest at Ukraine’s parliament in Kyiv to demand Ukrainian passports for their foreign volunteer fighters who came to fight in the war against pro-Russian separatists. The majority of the foreign fighters come from Belarus and Russia and will be imprisoned if they return to their native countries.Photo: @martynaimpictures I have been back working in Ukraine after three months away to begin a project on radical nationalist politics – now wholly dominating social discourse and grass-roots political change – particularly among young Ukrainians. The war continues in the east of Ukraine and has now claimed more than 13,000 lives, almost one-third of them civilians, and displaced close to two million, making it the bloodiest in Europe since the Balkans war of the 1990s.”
